PART-TIME ~10-15 hrs/week retainer

About the Role

We're looking for a mid-level growth operator to own on-platform audience growth and retention. This is a part-time retainer role (~10-15 hours/week) focused on getting people to subscribe to Technically, and keeping them engaged once they're subscribed.

This is distinct from our off-platform growth work (social media on YouTube / Instagram / Twitter) — you'll own growth of our 1st-party audiences (email lists).

Core Metric: Aggregate email opens per month, which encompasses both subscriber growth and retention.

Responsibilities

Subscriber Acquisition

You'll be responsible for all of the avenues that point new people to a Technically subscription form:

Recommendations: Manage our Substack recommendations strategy — who we recommend, who recommends us
Substack Notes: Generate, post + measure Notes based off of Technically content
Guest posting (contributor program): Identify and pitch contributors to write for Technically
Guest posting (outbound): Secure placements for Technically content on other platforms to reach new audiences
Organic search: Identifying topics that will rank well in search, producing content for those topics (or optimizing existing content)

Contributor Program

Think of this like a BDR function:

Build and maintain a pipeline of potential contributors (technical writers, practitioners, subject matter experts)
Cold outreach and relationship-building
Qualify contributors and hand off to editorial for content collaboration
Track and iterate on what outreach approaches work

Retention

Monitor and improve email open rates
Test email formats (roundups, single posts, news), subject lines, send times, preview text
Track site engagement and return visits
Identify content that drives re-engagement

You Should Have

2-4 years in growth, audience development, or content marketing
Strong writing ability — you'll be writing Notes, outreach emails, and potentially guest posts. Comfort with technical topics is a must.
Hustle mentality for cold outreach and contributor recruitment
Content SEO experience (keyword research, on-page optimization — not technical SEO)
Familiarity with newsletter platforms (Substack preferred, we also use Buttondown for email)
Interest in software, AI and technology topics

Nice to Have

Existing connections in the tech newsletter/media space
Experience growing a newsletter (yours or someone else's)
Background in B2B content marketing or developer marketing
Track record with cross-promotion and partnerships
